Ask Werner

An assistant that answers questions about your own cost, security, and invoice data — and never changes anything.

Ask Werner is the assistant in your Wring dashboard. It answers questions about your data — your spend, your security findings, your invoices — instead of giving you generic AWS advice you could have googled.

Ask it in plain language:

  • "Why did my bill go up last month?"
  • "Which service grew the most since May?"
  • "What are my most critical security findings, and how do I fix them?"
  • "How much of my invoice was covered by credits?"

What it can look at

Werner answers from the same data your dashboard shows, plus a live look at AWS when a question needs more detail than the daily sync stores:

It can readSo it can answer
Your synced cost historyspend over time, per service, per account, month-over-month changes
A live cost drill-downwhich usage type inside a service actually grew, when the summary isn't enough
Your security findingswhat's critical, what a finding means, how to remediate it
Your invoices and creditswhat you were charged, how credits and discounts were applied
CloudWatch metricslatency, errors, throughput — only if you enable the Observability level
Wring's own product logichow savings, volume discounts, or the billing transfer actually work

It recommends, it never acts

Werner has exactly the same read-only access as the rest of Wring — the roles it uses can read cost and metric data and nothing else, and writes are blocked at the IAM level, not by convention. When it suggests a fix, including a ready-made CLI command, you run it in your own account. Nothing Wring operates can change your infrastructure. See the access model for how that is enforced.

Daily insights

Werner also does a pass over your account once a day and surfaces what changed as short cards on the Ask Werner page:

  • Cost — the service whose spend grew most month over month, with a starting point for the investigation
  • Security — your most severe open findings, with remediation

Each card shows a rough impact and effort, and you can dismiss one for good or open it as a conversation to dig in. When you act on a cost insight, Werner re-measures that service's spend on later runs and marks the saving as verified once it actually drops — attribution by service cost, so treat it as honest rather than exact.

Conversations

Chats stream in as they're written and can be stopped mid-answer. Your conversations are kept, so you can rename them, come back to one later, delete them, retry an answer or copy it out. If you don't know where to start, the page suggests questions based on what your data shows.

Good to know

  • Werner sees your workspace's data only — never another customer's.
  • It reads billing and metric metadata, not what runs inside your workloads. There is no access to application data, logs, or instance contents.
  • Answers about very recent days inherit AWS's own reporting delay; see cost insights for how the daily sync catches up.
